A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit the National Veterans Memorial and Museum located in Columbus, Ohio. It’s one of the many places in the United States where those who served in the Armed Forces are honored and appreciated in an incredible way.
But this isn’t the typical military museum either!
It was designed to place the emphasis on the Veterans themselves instead of focusing on the wars fought or the equipment that was used.
The mission of the NVMM is to honor and positively impact the lives of Veterans, their families and our communities through sharing the Veteran experience — and they’ve done a great job of doing so.
Not only do they tell the bigger picture of what it’s like to have served and the sacrifices involved through beautifully crafted exhibits, they also create opportunities for Veterans in a variety of ways including ongoing events and additional resources within the community.
The venue itself is innovative and designed to provide military families with spaces to hold special events. The rooftop sanctuary allows you time to reflect while observing the amazing Columbus skyline.
As for their staff, I have to salute them for their respect, care, and friendliness to those who visit. These people made my visit a fantastic experience.
Finally, I will say one thing that caught my attention the moment I walked into the doors and which brought tears to my eyes, was seeing the video clips of my friends Dan McBride and Jim “Pee Wee” Martin, who have passed away in the last few years.
The NVMM was promoting A Rendezvous with Destiny, a documentary based on Jos Groen’s book, Three of the Last WWII Screaming Eagles, and a film I was also honored help to support. The premiere event for the release of this documentary was held right here at this museum.
I’m very glad to have made this stop and to now be a member of the NVMM, and even though it’s not 101st Airborne focused, I recommend you check it out if you’re ever in Columbus. It won’t disappoint!
How we miss our dear WW2 friends!!
